Stoke d’Abernon appears in Domesday Book of 1086 as Stoche, the suffix d’Abernon comes from a family who came over at the time of the Norman conquest in 1066.

St. Mary’s Church, Stoke D’Abernon is one of the oldest churches in Surrey. It was built in the 7th or 8th century AD re-using a large number of Roman bricks, probably from a nearby Roman building.

The railway station shares its name with nearby Cobham and was built at the end of the 19th century during the railway boom.

Stoke d’Abernon Cricket Club

Stoke D’Abernon Cricket Club was founded in the late 1800s and has played at the recreation ground on Stoke Road since 1885. The former England captain and fast bowler Bob Willis grew up in the village and played with the club before turning professional. In 12 matches for Stoke in the 1968 season, the teenage Willis took 49 wickets at 6.47 a-piece. 

In 1963 violinist Yehudi Menuhin founded The Yehudi Menuhin Music School which is internationally acclaimed, though today Stoke d’Abernon is probably more well known as being the home to the training ground of Chelsea FC, with many members of the past and present team living locally.

Despite its proximity to London and the M25, Stoke D’Abernon retains a semi-rural charm and more than a village feel with its Saxon church, village hall, and small parade of local shops.
